The bbc article explains what the hashtag is '  the # key was little more than something found on telephones'  which implies this articles audience is an older audience, or people who are not familiar with how to use twitter. Then it goes on to say 'Now hashtags are now the definitive way to group tweets on the same subject' which almost engages the reader, like they are missing out if they are not a user of twitter. 

'Twitter has cemented itself as a digital soapbox' ;' Digital soapbox' is an effective metaphor to explaining what twitter is, connoting things like dfjg
